Learning Objectives
Each student will complete a full year’s worth of high school chemistry labs in two days! By conducting three full chemistry experiments each day, students will acquire familiarity with how to keep a proper laboratory notebook, basic laboratory safety procedure, and a range of concepts that span all of high school general chemistry’s coursework. The labs to be completed will cover the following concepts:
- Solubility as a Function of Temperature
- Single Replacement Reactions
- Oxidation & Reduction Reactions
- Acid/Base Reactions & Titrations
- Heats of Fusion
- Electrochemical Oxidation

Requirements
Students need to be in high school (14 to 19 years old during 2026-27 academic year). There are no prerequisites, however students must be ready for Chemistry content. Order of high school science studies is up to parental choice. Students do not need to have completed Earth Science or Biology. Proper lab record keeping taught in this course will apply to all subsequent science classes.
No coursework is required prior to registration for this course. Before each experiment, a short pre-lab lecture will be given to introduce students to the relevant concepts from general chemistry. Upon registration, access to a free chemistry textbook will be sent to parents with a list of relevant sections to the labs conducted in the lab intensive. Students who wish to arrive extra-prepared can read these sections ahead of time, or the text may be used in its entirety afterward to fulfill the book work component for a full Chemistry credit, or replaced by a text of parent’s choice.
There are also no required materials for the course, as safety goggles, disposable lab coats, gloves, reagents and equipment, and lab notebook costs are included in tuition and will be supplied on site.
Instructor
This course will be taught by Simon Sealey, a recent graduate from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science Chemistry degree. A dedicated student, he was awarded the ODU’s Chemistry & Biochemistry departmental “Outstanding student in _____” awards for Analytical, Physical, and Inorganic Chemistry. He was designated the “Top Graduating Senior Chemistry Student,” for the ’25 –’26 academic year by ODU and recognized by the Hampton Roads local section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) as an “Outstanding Graduating Senior” at ODU. Each of these distinctions is awarded to only a single chemistry student each year! Beyond ODU, Simon placed among the top 1% of scorers on the ETS Major Field Test for Chemistry, a standardized test administered to graduating seniors nation-wide in all ACS accredited degree programs. For his score, he received the “Major Field Test award of distinction for excellence in all areas of chemistry”. Outside of his coursework, Simon has always had a passion for teaching. He hopes to pass on his love for chemistry in a fun and informative way to every student who takes this course.
FAQs
Public high school does not include 30 hrs of hands on lab work. This lab work involves accurately copying procedure into the manual, the lab itself, recording results and writing up lessons learned. A sheet of post-lab questions, with answer key supplied to the parent, will also be included in the course. All of these components add up to the total lab hours.
You will also have access to the lab manual we are using and can add additional lab work to the course. There are some very simple additional labs in there. There are many additional “kitchen table” type experiments that can be done with the parent for additional lab experience.
You can also count “observational” labs from YouTube videos or other demonstrations.
We will supply you with a free High School textbook to fulfill your text requirements, so you don’t need to spend any other additional money unless you choose. (There is also a local Roanoke home school library you can join for $35ish that you can check out other curricular options for the whole year.)
